Candle Care : How to Get the Best Burn Every Time

There’s nothing quite like lighting our beautifully scented candles and letting the fragrance fill your space. At Crumble and Core, our hand-poured soy candles are made to be enjoyed – but to get the most out of them, proper care is key.

Here’s everything you need to know to burn your candle safely and beautifully from the first light to the last glow.

1. Trim Your Wick Every Time

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 5mm (¼ inch). This helps prevent:

• Soot buildup

• Smoking

• Uneven flames or flickering

• A mushroom-shaped wick

Use a wick trimmer or scissors – just be sure the wick stays centered.

2. Let the Wax Pool on the First Burn

Your first burn is the most important. Let the candle burn until the entire surface becomes a pool of melted wax – this can take 2–4 hours depending on the size.

This step helps prevent tunneling, where the wax burns down the center and wastes product.

3. Don’t Burn for Too Long

As relaxing as candles are, it's best not to overdo it. For safety and longevity, we recommend:

• Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time

• Allow the candle to cool before relighting

• Never burn a candle all the way down – stop when 1cm of wax remains

4. Keep It Out of the Breeze

Place your candle in a draft-free area, away from open windows, fans, or radiators. Moving air can cause uneven burning, excess smoke, or flickering flames.

5. Clean the Jar Between Burns

If soot or residue builds up on the jar, wipe it with a damp cloth before your next burn. A clean jar looks beautiful and helps keep the flame steady.
